Ask a Stylist: Airport Attire – Navigating the friendly skies with comfort & confidence!

Image by Vicki Dvorak Dear Tiffany, I'm a big fan of your blog and your styling opinions, so I have to ask: what is your opinion on traveling attire? As comfortable as they are, I don't feel pj's are appropriate but wearing heels (as I've seen some do) seem unnecessary. What are your thoughts? Thank you for all you do! Megan D. Phoenix, AZ _________________________________________________________________ Hi Megan, I can't tell you how happy I am that you asked this question! This is an issue that bothers me, to my core, every time I enter an airport. First of all, you couldn't be more spot-on regarding "pjs"! Pajamas are never appropriate for the airport, or anywhere in PUBLIC for that matter! Pack them in your suitcase, put them on when you've reached your destination, when you're ready to unwind at the day's end and ONLY then. By the same token: unless you're under the age of 10, you have one option for your giant pillow (that you refuse to leave at home): pack it! The end. At the opposite end of the spectrum: 4 inch heels are also not an appropriate choice for air travel. Gasp! I know we love them (I couldn't be more guilty of that) but if flight attendants don't wear them, that's a solid cue that you shouldn't either. Have you ever tried walking down the aisle of an airplane in flight? Now imagine that balancing act in heels! Good luck. Plus, airports are designed with extremely long walking distances; from the ticket counter - to security (more on that later) - through the mile long terminals - to the gate; where you're then required to sit in a cramped airplane seat for several hours (or more) with your feet at an uncomfortable pitch? Having blisters when you land or when you reach your destination, just isn't okay or cute. Airport footwear: Flats are the perfect choice! Whether your favorite flats are: ballet, Converse, Tom's, riding boots, sandals, etc... keep your feet flat and comfortable. Also, unless you're okay with walking through security barefoot (eek!), wear flats that require socks or tuck a pair of socks into your purse to quickly slip on, once you slip your shoes off! Airport attire: Leggings, a long tunic & a lightweight shawl or scarf are always my go-to attire! Jeans, a blouse & a lightweight jacket or sweater are another solid option. I've seen some choose maxi dresses, which I understand are comfortable but I've found that anything too flowy just adds to the frustration of navigating busy terminals whilst juggling luggage. I personally, prefer pants (leggings, harem, linen, jeans, etc.) specifically because they're fitted; which means, they won't get in your way! They're easy, comfortable & tend to keep you at a constant cozy temperature too. The ultimate goal when choosing your traveling attire is to ask yourself: is this comfortable + chic? You always want to look put-together (styled) but comfort is key & layering is essential when it comes to traveling like a stylish pro. Thank you for your question Megan! :) Safe & stylish travels, Tiffany
